Provincetown Theater Provincetown
Formally the site of Provincetown Mechanics (before that a Ford dealership, and before that a barn), this old building was purchased by the Provincetown Theater Foundation to create a community theater for Provincetown, known as the home of American Theater since the Provincetown Players, including Eugene O’Neill, presented their work at the Provincetown Playhouse early in the twentieth century. The most recent incarnation, located on one of the town’s many wharfs, burned in 1977. Using the existing raw and open space, the design team envisioned a spacious and modern street-front facility including an entrance lobby with offices and dressing rooms. Beyond the lobby, in the old auto bays, a tiered 180-seat theater with state-of-the art staging, audio and lighting systems are located.
The Augustus crew and subcontractors were honored to be building the new home for this important community cultural institution, and worked with great enthusiasm and commitment to complete the project in time for the opening season in June 2004. Driven by budget and time constraints, the progress of the project involved the daily cooperative interaction of the Board of Directors, the architect, and Augustus, solving new problems and overcoming barriers in timely, cost-effective and creative ways.
